HAYDEN ORPHEUM PROTECTED ON STATE HERITAGE REGISTER

HAYDEN ORPHEUM PROTECTED ON STATE HERITAGE REGISTER

The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne will be protected for future generations after its listing on the NSW State Heritage Register.

The state heritage listing is the culmination of a two-year long process and community campaign to recognise and preserve the historical, architectural and cultural significance of the Orpheum.

The much-loved Hayden Orpheum was opened in 1935 and is celebrated as a well-preserved example of a theatre of the Art Deco style.

“The Orpheum holds a special place in our hearts, lives and community, and it is pleasing that it will now be preserved for the enjoyment of current and future generations,” Member for Willoughby Tim James said.

“Many of us will have fond memories of watching a show at the Orpheum.”

“Thank you to everyone who signed my community petition and rallied around the campaign to list this local icon on the NSW State Heritage Register.”

“Heritage matters and it is important we celebrate and preserve our history for the future.”

“I thank the leadership of the theatre, community groups, North Sydney Council and the Minister for Heritage for their work in delivering this win for our local heritage,” Mr James said.

Designed by leading architect, George Newton Kenworthy, under the vision of Mike Walsh OBE AM the Orpheum underwent a considerable restoration in the 1980s.
