Local residents will pay the price for Chris Minns Labor Government’s mismanagement of the Sydney Metro opening.
On 7 July 2024 Transport Minister Jo Haylen announced the Metro would open on Sunday 4 August 2024.
Many plans and arrangements have been made to align with that date including the new bus timetable which would connect bus and metro services.
Yesterday, just five days before the announced opening date, the Labor Government advised it will not open and there is no opening date now.
The Member for Willoughby Tim James said, “This is mismanagement writ large - a real mess of the Labor Government’s making. Surely there should have been certainty around the opening date before announcing it to the community and making major changes that hinge on it.”
“This fails the test of common sense and basic competence.”
“Unfortunately, it has major implications for local people, businesses and communities.”
“Now we’re told the bus timetable changes will proceed from Sunday but we don’t know when the Metro will open,” said Mr James.
The bus changes relied upon the Metro opening. Many bus services have been cancelled or routes changed to coordinate with the Metro.
“Now everyone affected, thousands of local people, will be caught in the middle of Labor’s mismanagement and will find the bus timetable changes challenging.”
“As some media reports have stated, it now seems the unions are calling the shots in this government.”
“This late delay and its flow on effects for people, business and community is unacceptable.”
“This Labor Government yet again shows that implementation is not something it can deliver. The Liberals designed, funded and substantially built the Sydney Metro. Labor’s job was to open it - and on this they have failed. Willoughby and NSW deserve better than Labor,” said Mr James
